Mayor John Ryder (lower left) proposed a $30,000 bond issue which included $15,000 for a building “of brick construction and artistic design, in keeping with the other architecture of the village,” to be built in what was then the new community park at Goodale Blvd. and Grandview Ave.

The Brotherhood of the Rook was established by male students in Grandview Heights in 1915, as a boys' social club. Worried that they would have to disband without a clubhouse, they developed a plan to build a house. George Urlin donated $300 for a lot at 1347 Elmwood Avenue, and shares (inset) were sold. A frame building with wood siding and a large fireplace was completed by 1922 (drawing by Bill Arter).

This French-style mansion, located at 1599 Roxbury Road was built between 1908 and 1912 by influential Marble Cliff resident and Columbus businessman Butler Sheldon, son of Robert Sheldon (inset), founder of Sheldon Dry Goods. Butler Sheldon's sister, Flora, was the senior President Bush's paternal grandmother, who lived nearby at 1550 Roxbury.

An architectural design competition sponsored by the Columbus chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Columbus Real Estate Board asked architects across the U.S. to submit designs for a house that cost under $6000 for lots very much like those in the developing areas of Grandview and Upper Arlington. The winning two-story design, shown here, is from architect Fred Wells of Toledo, and was estimated at $5956 to build.

Former Marble Cliff mayor and resident Robert Beightler became a famous Ohio political insider and military leader. Major General Beightler commanded the “Buckeye Division”, the 37th Division of the Ohio National Guard, activated for battle in the Pacific during the Second World War. The Beightler Armory in Columbus is named for him. He is shown here receiving a medal from the deputy commander of the Second Army after the war ended.

This WWII era inset photo shows Sam Delewese with his signature cigar and six of the Gloria personnel standing in front of the door from the restaurant to the night club. The photos above the door are Gloria employees, and Delewese and DeVictor sons who were in the service. Many of the waitresses were also family members. Shown here are Helen, Flora, unknown, Sam, Dori, Mary and Jildie.
