Local resident Caroline Welling Van Deusen is a Lincolnphile who collects books and artifacts about Abraham Lincoln. Van Deusen’s Lincoln roots run deep. Her great-great-grandmother Elizabeth L. C. Dixon was a close friend to Mary Todd Lincoln, who summoned her for support on the night the president was assassinated. Dixon comforted Mrs. Lincoln as the president lay on his deathbed that night in April 1865. Dixon’s husband, James, was a Connecticut senator whom Lincoln often consulted. Van Deusen is the Society’s featured speaker and shared her family’s historical connection with the Lincoln family.
